Words of Type is a project started by French and Chinese type designer Lisa Huang, who also wrote the descriptions in English and French after lots of research.

For other languages, we have made sure the descriptions are just as good, with added context whenever it is helpful. Native speakers with expertise in both typography and teaching were brought on board to handle the translations.

Most of the illustrations were created by Lisa Huang. But a large set of words benefit from using typefaces, and these are available for adoption by type foundries who can sponsor them so the illustrations use the sponsor’s typefaces.

We have also invited illustrators to bring their creativity to the project, making the encyclopedia even more diverse and fun!
